'Money Heist' Recap: What Happened in the Last Season of 'La Casa de Papel'?

Money Heist (aka La Casa de Papel) is believed to be the most-watched Netflix show not in English, with millions around the world gripped by every twist and turn of the show's complex plot. Season 3 doubled down on those plots by introducing a new heist. Most of the last eight episodes saw the team planning to steal 90 tons of gold from the Bank of Spain, with the finale ending halfway through that criminal act.

In order to do that, The Professor (played by Álvaro Morte) set-up "D-Day," which saw the team drop millions of Euros of cash onto Madrid to cause mass chaos and provide them a distraction during which they could break into the bank.

At the same time, the team were trying to get Rio (Miguel Herrán) back after he was captured by the authorities. To do this, The Professor and his great love Lisbon (Itziar Ituño) had to engage in a cat-and-mouse chase with police negotiator Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri). He was trying to arrange a way to get Rio back while all the time stopping the authorities from being able to track him.

Eventually, however, the police do track them down. Lisbon ends up hiding in a chicken coop, while The Professor is hiding up a tree, where they are still in contact. Lisbon eventually gets captured by the police, who pretend to kill her as part of her plan. This scheme is likely to backfire, however, as it leads the Prof to declare "all-out war" on the cops—something we are likely to see play out in Season 4.

The first act of this war, however, can be seen in La Casa de Papel Part 3. Miguel Herrán (Rio) and Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) hit a police tank with a rocket launcher. However, we learn that this was another trick from Alicia, who was hoping that the robbers would commit an act of violence against the police so as to give the police a reason to take out the team with force.

While Lisbon and the Prof are hiding from the police, the heist is underway.

The Prof tries to make the authorities believe that the thieves are escaping the bank by putting a GPS tracker into a ferret. This distracts them for a while before they realize they have been tricked.

In reaction to this, Alicia tells her force to "break them from the inside out." She does this by taking Axel, the son of one of the team, Nairobi (Alba Flores). Alicia then uses a blue teddy bear belonging to Axel (which Nairobi used to smuggle drugs) to tempt her out. This works, and she is shot by a sniper.

Many viewers thought she had died at the end of Money Heist Season 3, but she is confirmed to be appearing in Season 4, fighting for her life after losing a lot of blood.

Money Heist Season 4 is released on Friday, April 3 on Netflix.
