MONEY: TRADING UP ONLINE

It's been five long years since that NASDAQ bubble burst. Back then you could buy any stock and just sit back and watch it go up. Those were the days. Now you have to do your homework if you want to make money in this meandering market. At least the research is getting better, and the price is right. Wall Street analysts have become more independent, and some Web sites are giving away their recommendations at no cost. At starmine.com and investars.com, you can find out what the pros are saying about the stocks you already own and the ones you're planning to buy. Type in a ticker symbol, and the sites will give you estimates on future company earnings and trade recommendations. They'll also report which analysts have good records and which ones don't. So you may end up trading in your broker before you start trading stocks.
