'Monster Hunter World' PC Won't Have Mods or Cross-platform Play at Launch

Capcom announced its best-selling title, Monster Hunter World, is coming to PC in August. But players who are chomping at the bit to mod the game or play with their friends on PS4 and Xbox One may be disappointed.

In an interview with PC Gamer , producer Ryozo Tsujimoto said the team "doesn't have anything to announce at this time" when it comes to mod support for Monster Hunter World.

Tsujimoto was a bit more direct about the team's stance on cross-platform play, events and updates, noting the challenges of synching up the PC and console versions of Monster Hunter World.

" I want to synch these up as much as possible, but as mentioned previously regarding title updates, the differences in versions between platforms may prevent them being completely the same time. [Balance patches] will be a case-by-case situation. If we find bugs that are happening only on PC for example, or issues arising after a title update, then we would put patches out on each platform as soon as possible. If there was an issue common to all platforms, however, doing it piecemeal would be less preferable than fixing every version at the same time so that everyone has the same experience."

The Monster Hunter World PC release date announcement also revealed the console versions will receive updates and fixes first, with tweaks to the PC version coming later.

Cross-platform play has been a growing issue recently, as Fortnite's release on Nintendo Switch and mobile (both allowing for cross-platform play) shined a light on Sony's unusual stance on the topic. Even though Monster Hunter World is one of the biggest PS4 games of 2018, cross-platform play on that platform is not likely. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment America's President and CEO Shawn Layden recently spoke about the topic at the Gamelab conference in Spain.

"We're hearing it [about fans wanting cross-platform compatibility]. We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

Monster Hunter World will release for PC on Aug. 9.
