'Morning Joe' Host Calls Sean Hannity's Show 'Trash' After Segment With Newt Gingrich Slamming Mueller

Here's an understatement: Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was not happy with Sean Hannity on Thursday.

The MSNBC personality—and former Republican congressman in Florida—ripped into Hannity, who spent a good portion of his Fox News program the night prior slamming the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller as well as former FBI Director James Comey and failed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Hannity and his guests—chiefly former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich—also called for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to be fired while the show displayed graphics of the so-called Comey, Clinton and Mueller "crime families."

"It's beneath contempt," Scarborough said on MSNBC, via a clip posted by Mediaite. "Sean Hannity is a desperate, desperate man. Desperately defending a desperate, desperate president. Sean Hannity has a show that Shep Smith and the rest of the news people at Fox News consider to be a joke. They call it fake news, they call it entertainment. And that's fine if people want to be entertained that way at night. People watch the Kardashians, too. But when you have people at Fox News saying that's not really news, that's entertainment, it is. It's trash, though."

Hannity's show on Thursday seemed especially dedicated to defending President Donald Trump and pushing right-wing theories that the Justice Department was going after the former reality-TV star. Trump pleaded with Americans to tune in to the Fox News show earlier in the day, tweeting, "Big show tonight on @seanhannity! 9:00 P.M. on @FoxNews."

Scarborough, meanwhile later went on slam Gingrich's appearance on Hannity's show, during which he compared Mueller to Stalin. Scarborough said, via Mediaite:

"For Newt Gingrich to shame himself, for Newt Gingrich to disgrace himself, for Newt Gingrich to humiliate himself, for Newt Gingrich to lay waste to his legacy, by comparing a Vietnam War hero, who has dedicated his entire life to protecting the U.S. Constitution for Americans. To compare Bob Mueller to Joseph Stalin, the most evil man of the 20th century? Shows you how contemptible Newt Gingrich is as a man."

Reports have suggested that Trump has considered firing both Mueller and Rosenstein in an effort to hamper the investigation into the president's connections with Russia. Trump denied Thursday that he wanted to fire Mueller in December, as reported by The New York Times.

"If I wanted to fire Robert Mueller in December, as reported by the Failing New York Times, I would have fired him. Just more Fake News from a biased newspaper!" he tweeted.
