Mother Charged With Neglect After Daughter, 12, Has Baby With Man Twice Her Age

A mother in Tulsa, Oklahoma was recently arrested and charged with child neglect after her 12-year-old daughter had a baby with a man that was twice her age.

According to the Tulsa Police Department, the mother was identified as 33-year-old Desiree Castaneda. The Tulsa Police Department said in a Facebook post that investigators discovered that Castaneda was aware of her 12-year-old daughter's relationship with a 24-year-old man and the baby the two had together.

"The family permitted the relationship, and there are photos of the family throwing a baby shower for the victim and the suspect," the Tulsa Police Department said in the Facebook post.

Castaneda was arrested on Thursday and charged with enabling child sex abuse and child neglect. According to online jail records, Castaneda is currently being held in a Tulsa County jail on a $50,000 bond.

The arrest of Castaneda comes roughly two weeks after the Tulsa Police Department arrested the 24-year-old man that had the baby with Castaneda's 12-year-old daughter.

On July 14, the Tulsa Police Department announced that they had arrested 24-year-old Juan Miranda-Jara for first-degree rape of a minor.

In a previous Facebook post, the Tulsa Police Department said that they received reports of a potential rape and were called to a hospital in midtown Tulsa. When officers arrived at the hospital they spoke with Miranda-Jara who said that he was in a relationship with the 12-year-old girl since October 2020.

According to the Tulsa Police Department, the 12-year-old girl was at the hospital and in labor delivering Miranda-Jara's child, while he was speaking with officers.

The Tulsa Police Department said in the Facebook post that Miranda-Jara admitted to police officers that he was the biological father of the 12-year-old girl's baby. Due to her age, police did not provide any further information regarding the identity of the 12-year-old girl.

Under Oklahoma law, the age of consent in the state is 16 years old.

In the Facebook post announcing the arrest of the girl's mother, the Tulsa Police Department said that after they arrested Miranda-Jara, they received numerous questions from community members asking where the girl's parents were.

While speaking with the local Tulsa TV station, KOKI-TV, Tulsa Police Officer Danny Bean said that when Miranda-Jara and the 12-year-old girl arrived at the hospital "They walked in just like any other couple would excited to deliver their newborn child."

"We don't get this kind of call every day," Bean told KOKI-TV earlier this month. "It certainly was a surprise for everyone involved."

Newsweek reached out to the Tulsa Police Department for further comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
