Mother's Decapitated Body Reportedly Found Inside California Home, Son Detained by Police: 'Clearly He was Troubled'

A 34-year-old man has been taken into custody over the suspected murder of his 66-year-old mother inside their California home. The woman was found to have been decapitated, according to Fox 11 Los Angles.

The Laguna Beach Police Department said they were called to reports of a body which had been discovered by neighbors at the Laguna Terrace Mobile Park community at around 10:45 a.m. on August 18.

"Neighbors heard screaming and yelling and went in to check on the woman and found her deceased," Laguna Beach Police Chief Laura Farinella said told the Orange County Register. "They gave us a description of a man that may have been family who had been staying with her."

The suspect is believed to be the victim's son. Witnesses said they saw him leave the house and flee in his mother's car. "He seemed very nervous and just ran out of the house, jumped into his mother's car and took off," neighbor Danielle Cott told Fox 11 Los Angles.

Local residents said they went inside the home after seeing the victim's pet mastiff covered in blood. "They walked into the mother's bedroom who was all dressed and ready to go to church and walked into a horrific crime scene," Cott said.

The suspect was arrested around one hour later in San Clemente by Orange County sheriff's deputies. Police have not released the identities of the victim or suspect, but did confirm that a relative of the victim is in custody.

"We do have a family member in custody right now that we feel can fill in the missing pieces of this investigation," Sergeant Jim Cota of the Laguna Beach Police Department told KABC. "We have not officially said that he's being charged with the crime."

Cott told Fox 11 Los Angles: "Clearly, he was troubled. He was antisocial, but nobody saw the violence.

The community have paid tribute to the victim following her death. "She was a nice lady. She was probably doing the best she could. She had lost her husband about six years ago and she had just retired," Cott said.

Neighbor Jeff Feldman said: "She spent a lot of time trying to make it a better place for all of us to live."

According to The Orange County Register, the last homicide to occur in Laguna Beach took place in 2007. Two people were killed at the Montage Resort and Spa hotel during a confrontation with police following reports that a naked "crazy woman" was threatening people with a gun.
