30 Movies With 0 Percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes
Rotten Tomatoes has been guiding movie goers about what to watch for more than 20 years, via its Tomatometer curated critics' consensus and its Audience Score.
Joel Meares, the site's editor-in-chief, says the two different rating metrics offers people a "different perspective" to help guide their TV and film choices.
"We try to provide information at multiple levels," he tells Newsweek. "We offer the Tomatometer score, which shows what critics are saying and then you can deep-dive a little more and see the critics' consensus, and then even read and watch the reviews.
"But we also offer the Audience Score, as we want to give people the option to see what the general public, the non professional-critic hive also thinks of the movie.
"This gives you a different perspective, which sometimes is the same as what the critics are saying and sometimes it diverges."
Meares offers, as an example recently discussed on the Rotten Tomatoes is Wrong podcast, the 1998 Michael Bay film Armageddon, which has a 38 percent Tomatometer, but a 71 percent Audience Score.
"Critics found the movie a bit like a video game and overly jingoistic with silly dialogue," he adds.
"[But] there was something about the nonstop, relentlessness action and the Bruce Willis' and Ben Affleck's star power and that emotional finale that really connected with people and made them love it.
"The Tomatometer is a living, breathing thing, in the sense a review review is added, and therefore the percentage may change and that applies to something that's 50 years old.
"But it's much less frequently added to them the Audience Score, which is constantly alive and breathing, and so you may have 10,000 more people watch Armageddon this year, and go and add their their reviews on Rotten Tomatoes."
"So there is a time timeline difference between how the Tomatometer and the Audience Score responds."
