Here Are the 2020 MTV VMA Winners

The end of summer brings the MTV Video Music Awards, but this year's ceremony wasn't like those of years past.

Sunday night's big winners were Lady Gaga and the Weeknd. Gaga walked away with four competitive awards, plus the new "Tricon" lifetime achievement award. The Weeknd won the top prize, though, taking home the Video of the Year trophy at the end of the night, for his single "Blinding Lights," which he also sang during an explosive performance at the VMAs' opening. The After Hours singer also won the Best R&B award.

While MTV continued to award Moon People to the artists and videos deemed the best in their respective categories, several of the live performances—which the award show is typically known for—took place outside, all around New York City, with little to no live audience attending.

Actress and talk show personality Keke Palmer served as the host for Sunday night's virtual ceremony, which featured performances by BTS, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. Although the network planned to host the performances at an empty Barclays Center in Brooklyn, MTV instead opted for the performances to happen at various outdoor locations throughout New York City's five boroughs, according to Rolling Stone.

Grande and Gaga boasted the most nominations for the year, with nine each. Due to the coronavirus forcing so many artists to create unique videos in quarantine and hold virtual performances, MTV introduced a couple of new categories for 2020: Best Music Video from Home and Best Quarantine Performance.

Those aren't the only new awards, either. After the nominees were first announced in July, MTV announced a few fresh categories, including Song of the Summer, Best Group and Everyday Heroes, the latter of which honors musical performances by health care workers.

Sunday's pre-show was loaded with pre-recorded remote performances that resembled music videos, with Jack Harlow performing his song "What's Poppin" on a basketball court, Tate McRae dancing over a desk, and Chloe x Halle performing in shimmering metallic outfits.

The winners for three awards were also announced during the pre-show. BTS won two of them: Best Group and Best K-Pop. Machine Gun Kelly also earned the night's first Moon Person, for Best Alternative, for his video for "Bloody Valentine."
