National Peanut Butter Day 2020: Peanut Butter Deals at Walmart, Target and More

Today, January 24, is National Peanut Butter Day, which celebrates the classic American spread found in the cupboards of homes across the country and the world.

While there is evidence that ancient Inca Indians in South America may have been the first to have ground peanuts to create a butter, the late American physician Dr. John Kellogg is believed to have been the first to create peanut butter back in 1895, according to the National Peanut Board.

Others say it was first developed by another doctor in St. Louis, who was believed to have dished out a version of peanut butter as a protein substitute to elder patients who couldn't chew meat.

Peanut butter was first introduced to the world at the St Louis World's Fair in 1904 and later became a key source of protein for soldiers during the first two world wars. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were also made popular by the U.S. Army, who consumed them for sustenance during the Second World War.

Today, peanut butter is among the most popular food items in the U.S., raking in around $850 million in retail sales annually.

As the nation celebrates the classic spread, we round up some of the best peanut butter deals and special offers available.
