The 10 Most-Watched TV Shows on Netflix In July

Netflix has released some major shows in July, featuring everyone from Zac Efron to Michael Jordan to warrior nuns, but one series dominated the top 10s charts.

The Netflix top 10 charts have revealed exactly what fans have been watching in July, and there is no surprise to learn that subscribers to the streaming service are obsessed with true crime.

Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, Fear City, and Unsolved Mysteries all made the Netflix top 10.

The top 10 most-watched TV series on Netflix in July, however, will not stop some user's theories that the chart is weighted in favor of the streamer's original series, with all but one of the most-watched shows this month being Netflix Originals–and even that show (The Last Dance) aired as an Original outside of the U.S.

The Office and Avatar: The Last-Airbender had strong showings this month (with the latter breaking a major Netflix record), but they just missed out on the Top 10. The shows that made it, however, are as follows:

10. Fear City: New York vs. The Mafia

The most recently released show on this month's Netflix top 10, Fear City is a true-crime documentary that tells the story of the FBI operation to bring down the "Five Families" of organized crime in NYC. Though some have criticized the series for missing out some vital details, particularly about Donald Trump's links to the mob, the documentary does contain never-heard-before wiretaps that give a unique insight into life in the Mafia.

8. Floor is Lava
Days on chart: 15
Highest position: 1

With many people around the world feeling trapped in their homes by the coronavirus, a silly show about people escaping rooms tapped into the cultural moment, and did it with thousands of gallons of red slime, filling the floors of a studio that in reality is an old Ikea.

While some Netflix viewers spent July delving into the crime of the New York mob or Jeffrey Epstein, others just wanted to see the slapstick sight on people falling off platforms into gunge.

7. The Last Dance
Days on chart: 11
Highest position: 2

ESPN's Michael Jordan/Chicago Bulls documentary The Last Dance felt like a must-watch cultural moment when it aired in April, with Newsweek calling it one of the 10 best shows of the year so far. However, clearly enough people did not watch it at the time for it to be a hit for Netflix, who finally released it in July in the U.S.

Though some thought the doc did not do enough to interrogate some of the claims made about the G.O.A.T. basketball player, others found it a perfect reminder of one of the greatest eras of the sport.

Speaking of nostalgia, Netflix had another hit on its hands with The Baby-Sitters Club, its adaptation of the iconic franchise of books for teenagers by Ann M. Martin. The streamer updated the show for the 2020s by upping the diversity of its cast and having them be social media savvy, but they kept the iconic see-through landline that was the dream phone of many a '90s kid.

5. Dark Desire
Days on chart: 15

The only non-English show to appear on the July top 10, Dark Desire (aka Oscuro Deseo) gave telenovela fans the dose of escandalo they were looking for.

The steamy series was also part of a trend this month for content with very graphic sex scenes, with films 365 Dni and Love spending multiple days on the Netflix movie charts.

4. Cursed

The ending of Game of Thrones last year saw nearly every network and streaming service rush any fantasy series they could into production trying to fill the gap left by the biggest show in the world. The Witcher remains Netflix's biggest fantasy hit, but their new adaptation of the King Arthur legends is coming for its crown–or should that be its Sword of Power?

warrior nun season 2

2. Down to Earth with Zac Efron
Days on chart: 20
Highest position: 1

The nearly three-week run on the Netflix charts for the High School Musical star's travel series proves one thing: You can get people to care about global sustainability if it is discussed by an often shirtless Zac Efron. People watched the show for many reasons. Some wanted to learn about how groups across the world are trying to make an eco-friendly future. Some wanted a bit of armchair tourism as they were stuck in their houses and apartments. Mostly, however, it was topless Efron.

unsolved mysteries netflix
'Unsolved Mysteries' was rebooted by Netflix in July Netflix

1. Unsolved Mysteries
Days on chart: 26
Highest position: 1

Unsolved Mysteries dominated the Netflix charts for most of July, with an 11-day run at number one. With so much uncertainty in the air, it was the perfect time for a show looking into strange crimes that had never been solved, especially as people had plenty of time to delve into mysteries of Rey Rivera's letter, the whereabouts of Xavier DuPont or the creepiness of Rob Endres. And with six more episodes already confirmed for the show, the mystery is far from over.
