Its can-do attitude has allowed the fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner to seamlessly go from country road to city street to dusty trail. The new 2022 Toyota 4 Runner TRD Sport combines familiar style and capability with new equipment and features.

The 2022 4Runner TRD Sport builds on the 4Runner SR5 grade. It is designed to complement the 4Runner TRD Off-Road and Pro, giving buyers a trail-ready option with added flair and road-worthy features. Toyota offers a similarly positioned trim level in its Tacoma midsize truck lineup.

Most notably, the fresh 4Runner has a supple suspension that's designed to absorb more of the road's imperfections and reduce body lean. This is the same suspension found in the 4Runner Limited.

Two-wheel drive versions of the new midsize SUV offer 9.0 inches of ground clearance while four-wheel drive 4Runners have 9.6 inches.

Toyota has given the 4Runner TRD Sport machine-faced 20-inch wheels; a full-size spare tire; front spoiler; black roof rails; and color-keyed grille accents, rocker panels, and body molding. It gets a Toyota Racing Development-style hood scoop. LED head-, fog-, and taillamp are included.

This 4Runner has the same engine as the rest of the lineup, a 4.0-liter V6 that makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The five-speed automatic transmission is a carryover as well.

Every 4Runner comes with an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The interior of the 4Runner TRD Sport is well-appointed with black SofTex-trimmed seats with gray contrast stitching and TRD stitched logos. The front seats are heated. Passengers rest their feet on TRD Sport floor mats.

Each 4Runner TRD Sport model comes standard with an 8-inch infotainment touch screen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. A USB port, hands-free phone capability, voice recognition, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hot spot round out the tech features list.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard on all 4Runners for 2022 and includes lane departure alert with sway warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport goes on sale this autumn. Pricing for the model has yet to be announced but the expected starting MSRP is in the low $40,000s.
