Is There Mail on New Year's Day 2020? USPS, UPS and FedEx Holiday Hours

New Year's Day is a national holiday observed by several federal organizations including post offices and courier services.

Here we look at New Year's Day hours for the United States Postal Service (USPS), UPS and FedEx.


All USPS branches are closed on New Year's Day. "Regular mail will not be delivered New Year's Day," but "all Post Office locations will open and resume regular mail delivery on Saturday, January 2, 2021," the USPS notes.

Priority Mail Express mail will be delivered on New Year's Day, however the delivery is "not a guarantee, unless otherwise noted.

"Actual delivery date may vary depending on origin, destination, Post Office acceptance date and time and other conditions, including customs delays," the USPS adds.

Mail will not be picked up from USPS blue collection boxes on New Year's Day but normal collection resumes on January 2.

USPS has also announced several measures in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"The Postal Service continues to follow the strategies and measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health departments regarding COVID-19 (

"We are additionally reinforcing workplace behaviors to ensure that contact with our customers reflects the best guidance regarding healthy interactions, social distancing and risk minimization," the USPS notes.

On New Year's Day, there is no UPS pickup or delivery service. while the UPS Express Critical service is available, according to the UPS website.

Normal pick-up and delivery service for Air and international Air services only resumes on January 2.

Scheduled delivery times for Air and international Air packages scheduled for delivery on January 2 "will be extended as follows: UPS Next Day Air® Early and UPS Worldwide Express Plus services will be extended by 90 minutes and all other Air and international Air services will be extended to end-of-day," according to the UPS website.

The company also notes: "The novel coronavirus pandemic has created unprecedented complexities, which have required us to constantly reassess our operations.

"Effective 26 March 2020 and until further notice, we have suspended the UPS Money Back Guarantee (also referred to as the UPS Service Guarantee) for all shipments from any origin to any destination.

"Prior to shipping, please check to see if your recipient's location is open, since business opening hours may have changed due to local restrictions. If the location is closed, we may return the package to the sender," the company adds.

The Fedex Custom Critical service is open on New Year's Day but the following FedEx services are closed on January 1, according to the FedEx website:

  • Express
  • Ground
  • Home Delivery
  • SmartPost
  • Freight
  • Office
  • Trade Networks (**FedEx advises "Customs clearance at U.S.-Canada land-border crossings is available 24 hours a day, every day, via FedEx Trade Networks, subject to the availability of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Check with your FedEx Trade Networks representative regarding the availability of customs clearance at U.S.-Mexico land-border crossings.")

Some services that are closed on New Year's Day resume as normal on January 2, including FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx Trade Networks.

FedEx Express is on a modified service, with "early on-call pickups in some areas," while the Office service will be on modified hours, according to the FedEx website.

"FedEx Office locations will open by 7 a.m. [local time] or at their regular time. Please contact your local FedEx Office location for details," FedEx advises.

The FedEx Ground, SmartPost and Freight services will remain closed on January 2, according to the website.

FedEx has also announced a series of actions taken amid the ongoing outbreak, including "updates to money-back guarantee, mask requirements, exclusive store hours and more," the company states.
