New Year's Eve Times Square: NYC Map, Road Closures, Parking Information

As an estimated million people pack into Times Square in New York City, several of the surrounding roads will be closed off to traffic.

Times Square has been an iconic New Year's Eve destination for more than a century, and over the years, the New York Police Department has improved the art of keeping people safe. In preparation for the 2018 celebration, multiple roads were closed, along with certain subway entrances.

Road Closures

Beginning at 4 a.m. on Monday, Times Square was closed to vehicular traffic, as well as:

  • Seventh Avenue from 43rd Street to 48th Street
  • Broadway from 43rd Street to 48th Street
  • 43rd Street to 48th Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue

Starting at 11 a.m., 37th Street to 57th Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue will be closed. Large vehicles, including trucks and commercial vehicles, will also be prohibited from traveling in several Midtown areas, beginning at 11 a.m., including:

  • North on Sixth Avenue from 34th to 59th Streets
  • North on Eighth Avenue from 34th to 59th Streets
  • East of Ninth Avenue from 37th Street to 59th Street
  • West of Fifth Avenue from 35th Street to 59th Street

Road closures will increase at 1 p.m. on Monday, which will include:

  • Seventh Avenue from 41st Street to 59th Street
  • Broadway from 47th Street to 59th Street
  • 42nd Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue

Along the areas closest to Times Square, the NYPD explained that traffic closures could be instituted if crowd conditions warrant it. The roads that could be closed include:

  • All cross-town streets from 37th Street to 41st Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue
  • All cross-town streets from 49th Street to 59th Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue
  • 48th Street from Fifth Avenue to Ninth Avenue

Emergency vehicles will have cross-town access on 42nd Street, 48th Street and 59th Street.

Prohibited Parking

Parking will be highly restricted near Times Square on December 31 and into the first day of 2019, with areas blocked off from 12:01 a.m. on Monday until 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Areas where parking is prohibited include:

  • All cross-town streets from 33rd to 59th Street between 6th and 8th Avenue
  • West side of 5th Avenue, from 37th to 52nd Streets
  • West side of 6th Avenue, from 34th to 59th Streets
  • Both side of 6th Avenue, from 37th to 52nd Streets
  • Broadway between 34th to 59th Streets
  • 7th Avenue between 34th to 59th Streets
  • 9th Avenue between 41st to 43rd Streets
  • West side of 10th Avenue, from 58th to 59th Streets
  • Both sides of 11th Avenue, from 34th to 39th Streets
  • East side of 11th Avenue, from 58th to 59th Streets
  • Both side of 8th Avenue from 34th to 59th Streets
  • 34th Street between 5th and 9th Avenue
  • 34th Street between 11th to 12th Avenues
  • 37th Street between 5th and 8th Avenue
  • 38th Street between 6th to 8th Avenue
  • 39th Street between 6th to 8th Avenue
  • 40th Street between 5th to 9th Avenue
  • 41st Street between 6th to 8th Avenue
  • 42nd Street between 1st to 2nd Avenue
  • 42nd Street between 5th and 9th Avenue
  • 43rd Street between 5th and 8th Avenue
  • 44th Street between 6th to 9th Avenue

Subway Disruptions

The NYPD recommended that people take public transportation if they're going to the Times Square event, however, some trains will not be stopping at some of the closest stations. Beginning at noon on Monday until 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, N/R/W lines will bypass the 49th Street station. The northbound IRT No.1 train will also bypass the 50th Street station beginning at noon on Monday until 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

Along with restrictions on where traffic would be permitted for the massive event, the NYPD placed restrictions on what those attending the Times Sqaure event would be allowed to bring with them. Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, alcohol and chairs were prohibited.
