New York Man Charged With Alleged Repeated Rape of 11-Year-Old Girl in Her Home

A man accused of repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl in her New York City home has been arrested. Andre Clarke, 45, was taken into custody a day after police issued an appeal for information about his whereabouts after he allegedly raped the child in her home on Saturday morning.

Clarke has been charged with three counts of rape, three counts of sexual abuse and three counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department confirmed to Newsweek.

Police issued the public appeal to locate Clarke, of Staten Island, after he allegedly raped the girl inside her home in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Police said they received a report that Clarke had raped the girl inside her home at around 9 a.m. on Saturday. Emergency services responded to the residence and took the girl to hospital in a stable condition, police said.

Clarke was apprehended at a hotel in the borough of Queens just after 5 a.m. on Sunday, NBC New York reported.

"Andre Clarke, the suspect from yesterday's rape has been apprehended," NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison tweeted on Sunday morning. "Excellent work by Brooklyn North Violent Felony Squad and Special Victims for locating the suspect and making the apprehension. Keep up the great work and as always, stay safe!"

The New York Police Department said the investigation is ongoing. It was not immediately clear how Clarke knew his alleged victim.

Before Clarke's arrest, police had offered a reward of up to $2,500 for information on his whereabouts.

According to the Rape, Abuse And Incest National Network (RAINN), perpetrators of child sexual abuse are often known to the victim.

The non-profit says statistics show that in 93 percent of cases reported to law enforcement, the victims know the perpetrator. The perpetrator is a family member in 34 percent of cases, an acquaintance in 59 percent of cases and a stranger in only 7 percent.

RAINN also says that child sexual abuse is a widespread problem—with child protective services substantiating or finding evidence for a claim of child sexual abuse every nine minutes.

One in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult, according to RAINN.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can be submitted on the CrimeStoppers website or on Twitter @NYPDTips. All calls are strictly confidential.
