Dog Who Loves Early Morning Swims, Norman, Wins Pet of the Week

Like most reasonable people on Earth do, Newsweek loves pets. Big, small, fluffy, short-haired—all of them.

Despite being hard to pick, this week's Pet of the Week is a New Jersey Newfoundland who heads to the pool in his backyard every day for a morning dip, with or without his family, before drying off on a sun lounger.

This week also saw pets go international and introduced a pair of cats who are living abroad in Barcelona for the summer, one of which is a real-life "Smelly Cat" with the name Mr. Stinky, a heart-melting cat living in Peru and a New Zealand poodle.

If you think your pet is deserving of some limelight too, you can submit them with the easy steps at the bottom of the page.

Norman Is Pet of the Week

Norman the dog loves swimming

Five-year-old Norman is a Newfoundland from New Jersey who just loves the water in the summer followed by lounging in the sun. He might be big, but he's definitely not scary and has melted the hearts of his whole family who say he is the funniest dog they've ever had.

"He was one of two puppies born to his momma," owner Karin Smith told Newsweek. "Out of all the large breed dogs we have owned, he is by far the one with the funniest and most playful personality."

Newfoundlands are impressively large dogs, described by the American Kennel Club as a "powerful working dog of heavy bone and dignified bearing." The average Newfoundland can weigh up to 150 pounds and measure 28 inches across the shoulder.

They are, however, friendly giants, with Norman being the perfect example. They're known to be great with children and have even been dubbed the "nanny dog"' for exactly that.

"He, like a child, has his favorite stuffed animal baby which he carries around daily and greets us with after work," said Smith.

Above all though, Norman loves to swim and spends his summer out in the pool. "Norman looks forward to summer and swimming. He especially likes to go in the pool when others are in, but many times he goes for a dip early in the morning and lays on the lounge chair to dry off."

This Week's Runners Up

1 of 3

Mr. Stinky and Ms. Fuzzy are the first runners up. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the two adorable cats are spending the summer in Barcelona thanks to their owner's job. JoAnne Worthington's husband is a professor teaching Georgia Tech students in Spain.

As his name would suggest, Mr. Stinky was dubbed it thanks to the not-so-pleasant smell he had when he first arrived home from the shelter due to the antibiotics he was on. Like her brother, Ms. Fuzzy also went through a transformation after being rescued and went from a "skinny sad kitty to a beauty", earning her name.

"My kitties are living the dream. Back in the U.S., they were indoor cats who ate too much and were lethargic. I picked out this home in the El Raval neighborhood in Barcelona just for my babies, and they love it," Worthington told Newsweek.

"When they are not eating, or sleeping at night with me, they are running outside, playing chase with each other, and talking to the birds. Their appetites have changed too. While finicky in the U.S., they now love fresh seafood from the famous Mercado de La Boqueria. Sardines are their passion."

Floky the cat

Second runner up Floky is also from Barcelona, but now lives in Peru, after Mireille Silva's daughter rescued him while studying abroad.

"She adopted Floky when he was 1 or two months old, because he was found in a park at night, and rescued by a family who couldn't keep him because they had too many pets," she told Newsweek.

"My daughter fell in love with Floky and adopted him; then when she finished her studies, she brought him to Lima, Peru where we live."

Floky is mischievous and has two older brothers who he loves to play with and at times, bother. "He is very funny, playful and adores my daughter," said Silva.
