Student Killed in Crash Hours After Attending Prom

A high-school student in Pennsylvania was killed in a car crash on Saturday morning, just hours after he attended prom.

Nicholas Mannino, 18, of Pipersville, Pennsylvania, was a passenger in a car with three other students that lost control at around 1:20 a.m. on Ledgedale Road, according to Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland.

He said that the car overturned and struck several trees during the crash, with Mannino transported to the Geisinger Medical Center in Scranton, where he was pronounced dead at around 4:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

At the time of the incident, the students were travelling to the Poconos, where they were scheduled to stay for the weekend.

Mannino was one of four Central Bucks East students in the car at the time of the incident. One of the students suffered life-threatening injuries, with their current condition unknown.

Principal Chad Watters confirmed the crash in a letter to parents and students on Saturday and revealed that the teenagers involved in the accident had attended prom on Friday night, which the Bucks County Courier Times reported took place from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. local time.

"It's natural to begin to question the cause but I ask that you remain focused on the need to support our families, our students, each other, and our larger community as we process this tragedy," Watters wrote in the letter obtained by ABC 6.

"The death of a student, particularly on the cusp of what is a celebratory time of year, renders us deeply saddened and searching for answers.

"The void left behind when something of this magnitude occurs, coupled with the unspeakable grief in the wake of such loss is very real, and carries much emotion."

Tommy Smith, who was one of the teenagers in the car when it crashed, told ABC 6 that Saturday was the "worst day of my life, upset I lost my best friend," and revealed that he was saved by one of the other passengers, who was "my only other friend that was conscious."

Acting superintendent Abram Lucabaugh said that the school district is working with students and their families to support them in the wake of the incident, telling the Courier Times that it is "focused on providing support to our students, families and wider community at this time."

Seniors at the school are scheduled to graduate on Thursday. The crash is being investigated by Pennsylvania State Police.

Newsweek has contacted the Central Bucks School District, Rowland, and the Pennsylvania State Police for comment.
