'Total Bellas' Season 3 May Reveal Why Nikki Bella and John Cena Broke Up

The reason behind Nikki Bella and John Cena's sudden split may be revealed on the new season of E! reality show, Total Bellas.

Perhaps the most popular couple of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) franchise, Bella and Cena's engagement was highly anticipated by fans. The duo started dating in 2012 and much of their relationship was shared on E! hit series Total Divas, which they both starred on before Bella and her twin sister, Brie Bella, landed their own spinoff.

Cena, 41, proposed to Bella, 34, during Wrestlemania 33 last year. But nearly a month before they were supposed to make their trip down the aisle, the couple shockingly called off the wedding, making the announcement in a joint statement in April.

Cena and Bella didn't say why they went their separate ways, but a new trailer for Total Bellas Season 3 hinted the wrestler's dream of motherhood may have been the reason.

In a clip, the couple is shown in the middle of a deep conversation, during which Cena tells a teary-eyed Bella that he'd never force her "not to be a mom."

"I thought I could really sacrifice that, but I just can't," Bella responds.

The scene closes with Cena making a bold statement: "I'm not sure we should go through with this."

Since the couple first revealed their relationship on Season 1 of Total Divas in 2013, children and marriage were often the main points of disagreement for them. Having been previously married to Elizabeth Huberdeau from 2009 to 2012, Cena would often proclaim he'd never remarry and he didn't want any children.

The champion wrestler eventually changed his mind on the idea of marriage, but from the looks of the Total Bella's trailer, he seemed dead-set on not having kids.

When asked about his breakup at CinemaCon 2018 on April 25, Cena told Entertainment Tonight, "It sucks."

"There's no other way to say [it]," he continued. "I love Nicole with all my heart, and that's that."

Total Bellas returns to E! with Season 3 on May 20 at 9 p.m. ET.
