Is 'Nine Perfect Strangers' on Hulu Based on a Book?

Nine Perfect Strangers look for inner-peace and serenity in the new Hulu TV series, which launched its first three episodes on the streaming service Wednesday.

The TV series features a star-studded cast including the likes of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy and Michael Shannon, and is co-created by David E. Kelley who brought audiences the HBO hit Big Little Lies.

The story behind the Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu isn't original for TV, and comes from the same place as its predecessor Big Little Lies. Both shows originated as books written by Liane Moriarty.

The book Nine Perfect Strangers is based on

Australian author Moriarty wrote the novel Nine Perfect Strangers, which was published in 2018. The story, characters and setting form the basis of the new Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers.

The book features small differences to the television show, but much from the original story remains the same. In the novel, the retreat Tranquillum House is based in Australia while the TV version is in California. Ironically it was actually filmed in Byron Bay, Australia but is masquerading as America. Some of the characters also have different backgrounds, professions and motivations to who we meet on Hulu.

Nine Perfect Strangers made The New York Times Bestseller list and was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in 2018. In January 2020, it was announced that the book was to be adapted into a TV series with Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy set to star and executive produce. David E. Kelley, John-Henry Butterworth and Samantha Strauss were confirmed as writers.

Liane Moriarty's other books

Moriarty's most notable work before Nine Perfect Strangers was Big Little Lies, which was published in 2014 and adapted for two seasons of television in 2017.

Kidman, Kelley, Bruna Papandrea and Moriarty all contributed to bringing Big Little Lies to television and they've reunited for Nine Perfect Strangers too.

Another of Moriarty's novels, The Husband's Secret (2013) is reportedly being made into a movie after CBS Films acquired the rights to the book. In 2017, Variety reported that Blake Lively had signed on to star in The Husband's Secret, but the project seems to have stalled since then.

Entertainment Weekly reported in 2017 that What Alice Forgot (2009), Truly Madly Guilty (2016) and her debut novel Three Wishes (2004) had all been optioned and were set for screen adaptations as well. In 2017, Deadline suggested Jennifer Aniston was in talks to star in What Alice Forgot.

Nine Perfect Strangers is available to watch on Hulu now. The first three episodes dropped August 18, with each subsequent episode airing every Wednesday.
