'Baldur's Gate,' 'Neverwinter Nights,' 'Icewind Dale' and 'Planescape Torment' Coming to Nintendo Switch

Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights are coming to the Nintendo Switch, beginning this September.

The landmark Dungeons & Dragons RPGs will be released in three packages, with two bundles coming out September 27, Nintendo Life reports. The first will pair Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. The second, out the same day, will include both Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition will be released on its own on December 6.

The Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Pack includes both the original and its sequel, plus all of the DLC, including the Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear expansion, created in 2016 to bridge the first and second games. Originally developed by BioWare (Mass Effect, Dragon Age), the Baldur's Gate series is based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rules and is set in Forgotten Realms. In both Baldur's Gate games, you play as the ward of the mage Gorion, who seeks adventure on the Sword Coast after being forced out of his home in the library fortress of Candlekeep.

The Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition and Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition bundle, also includes all of the DLC for both games. Torment, released in 1999, is still considered a classic of the genre and one of the most influential RPG releases of the 90s. The game places a heavy emphasis on talking over combat, as you slowly unravel the truth about the immortal Nameless One, who awakens without his memories in a Sigil mortuary at the beginning of the game. Icewind Dale, released in 2000, is more combat-focused.

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition is the newest of the D&D RPGs coming to the Nintendo Switch. Released in 2002, Neverwinter Nights switches to Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules, which introduced the d20 system. Featuring 10 standalone campaigns, Neverwinter Nights is a massive game. Publisher Skybound Games confirmed to Newsweek that the Switch version of Neverwinter Nights will have multiplayer.

The five Dungeons & Dragons games coming to Nintendo Switch will significantly bolster the RPG selection in the digital Nintendo Game Store, but the bundles will also have a retail packaged release.

The Switch editions were developed by Canadian developer Beamdog, whose Enhanced Edition rereleases of classic D&D RPGs have been well-received on other platforms. They even made Planescape: Torment playable on a tablet, so hopefully the Switch adaptation will be as successful.
