Why It Matters

In total, 12 victims have been reported. One person was pronounced dead, another is in critical condition, and several others remain hospitalized, officials said. Local and state-level investigators are currently working at the scene to identify the suspect or suspects involved and determine a motive.

What To Know

Catawba County lies in the western region of the state, approximately an hour north of Charlotte. The shooting took place at a home on a section of Walnut Acres Drive, according to officials statements and images of the residence.

Witnesses report that there was a large party at the residence before the shooting, with around 100 attendees. During the gathering, several individuals began discharging firearms, leading to chaos and panic among the crowd.

Drone footage taken by the North Carolina station WBTV shows the house cordoned with tape, with several law enforcement vehicles parked outside and investigators collecting evidence.

In a post to Facebook on Sunday morning, the Sheriff's Office said it was collaborating with the Hickory Police Department as well as special agents from the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation to "to establish a motive and identify those responsible. No arrests have been made as of this release." One sheriff told WRAL News said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had offered assistance "assessing the crime scene, and helping us identify and follow leads."

What People Are Saying

One local Catawba County resident told the North Carolina station WBTV that the shooting occurred at a pool party. The unnamed individual added that the shooting "occurred mostly outside and appeared to be random."

"As soon as I heard the shots everybody started scattering off, ducking our heads, running off toward our cars toward safety. And I called my friend and he said 'call 911. I need help,'" another witness told ABC News-affiliate WSOC.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office wrote on social media: "On Sunday, 06/01/2025 at 12:45 a.m. deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office and officers with the Hickory Police Department responded to a report of multiple persons shot at a residence on Walnut Acres Dr, which is located in the Mountain View community of southwest Catawba County. As of this release, twelve (12) victims have been reported. One of these reported victims is deceased. Another of these reported victims is in critical condition. Several others remain hospitalized."

A Catawba County Sheriff, interviewed by WRAL News, said it was "certainly possible" that more victims could lose their lives following the shooting, counting the number in "serious" condition as 10, in addition to the one "critical" and the deceased individual.

In response to a reporter asking whether those in the community should be concerned for their safety, he added that there was no apparent danger to the general public, and that the shooting "does seem to be something that had some focus associated with that party."

What Happens Next?

No arrests have been made as of the latest update. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Catawba County Sheriff's Office at 828-464-3112.
