Strangers have shed tears over a note left by homeowners to the people who bought their house.
Realtor Melissa Douglas, 26, discovered the sweet note, and she told Newsweek that she was "absolutely touched" by the gesture. After sharing her discovery to her TikTok account @melissadouglasrealtor in September, thousands of users have felt similar emotions.
The video, viewed over 135,000 times and boasting more than 22,000 likes, shows a handwritten note with the words: "May this new home bring you as much joy and love as it did for us and our family."

When Douglas turns the note over, she sees it has been written on the back of a photograph, showing the previous owners, a senior couple, embracing in front of their home. The camera then pans up to show that very same home, now ready to go to a new family to start making new memories.

...
Douglas, who works in Illinois, said it was "so sweet and kind of them to write this to the new buyers."
She added that the buyers "felt the same way, and were happy they have a house filled with so much love to grow their family in."

As a realtor, Douglas said that she doesn't see these gestures too often, "but it is so sweet and special when I get to."
In 2023, the homeownership rate in the United States was 65.7 percent, according to data from Statista. It marked a rise from 2016, when 63.7 percent owned their own home, but remains lower than 2004, when 69.2 percent owned their home.

Douglas shared the video to TikTok with the caption, "This final walk-through has me in my feels," and in response to one comment, she said she was going to "cry again" over the cute note.

...
And users responded in their droves, with one writing: "Didn't expect to open my TikTok and cry but here we are."
"I'm legitimately sobbing into my coffee," another posted, while one wrote simply: "I'm crying."
Others shared their own stories, with one commenting: "Our sellers left us pictures of their kids in Halloween costumes on the porch."
"We just bought a house and they built the house and left a slide of pics from the construction of the home. Also a binder with neighbor phone numbers, appliance manuals, etc," another posted, adding: "I was stunned."
Douglas loved the reaction to her video, as "everyone got to share a little bit of a story, good or bad, of experiences they have had, and I think it tugged on everyone's heartstrings."
