NY Giants Star Saquon Barkley Likely Out For The Season With Injury

The New York Giants have started the 2020 NFL season with two losses. But even more devastating, the team lost one of its top players. Running back Saquon Barkley, who is considered one of the best backs in the league, tore an ACL on Sunday in a 17-13 loss to the Chicago Bears.

NFL reporter Ian Rappaport of NFL.com tweeted that Barkley is likely out for the season.

"#Giants RB Saquon Barkley suffered an ACL tear, based on the manual tests and initial diagnosis, source said. He'll have an MRI to tell the full story, but the belief is the star is done for the season. Coach Joe Judge said they are holding out hope," Rappaport tweeted.

The injury happened early in the first quarter when Barkley ran toward the sideline and got tackled by Bears safety Eddie Jackson. Barkley could be seen grabbing his knee while on the ground.

Barkley, who had four carries for 28 yards before the injury, was later carted to the locker room.

Initial reports indicated that Barkley's injury might not be a tear, and he underwent X-rays inside the stadium. Though the Giants held out hope for Barkley, later reports say he will most likely be done for the season.

Barkley was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft, and he made a huge impact with more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage his rookie season. A high ankle sprain sidelined him most of the 2019 season, and the 2020 season began with just 6 yards on 15 rushing attempts in a Monday night loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Barkley wasn't the only Giants player to go down with an injury Sunday. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard had a toe injury late in the first half. Upon returning in the third quarter, Shepard couldn't finish a route. This was the first time, in a long time, that Giants second-year quarterback Daniel Jones had his full arsenal of offensive weapons.

On the flip side of this game, Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery left the game with a neck injury. While trying to hurdle a defender, Montgomery flipped and landed on his head. He left for the locker room, but later returned for the second half and had even more carries.

There were significant injuries all around the NFL on Sunday. Here are some of the more notable ones:

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey scored two touchdowns against Tampa Bay, but left the game after injuring his ankle on the second score. He never returned to the game, and the Buccaneers defeated the Panthers, 31-17.

The San Francisco 49ers had the greatest amount of notable injuries with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (high ankle sprain), defensive end Nick Bosa (knee), running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman (lower body) and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas (lower body injury).

Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers left the game Sunday with a rib injury.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams left his game with a hamstring injury.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor was scratched as the starter before their game as he had a chest injury.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Parris Campbell left the game with a knee injury, but team officials do not believe it's a tear. Meanwhile, Colts safety Malik Hooker left the game on Sunday with an Achilles injury, and he will have an MRI on Monday to determine if it was torn.
