Ocasio-Cortez Chief of Staff Deletes Tweet Slamming Moderate Democrats For 'Enabling Racist System'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-N.Y.) Chief of Staff Saikat Chakrabarti on Thursday deleted and replaced a tweet condemning moderate Democrats for enabling a "racist system."

"Instead of 'fiscally conservative but socially liberal,' let's call the New Democrats and Blue Dog Caucus the 'New Southern Democrats.' They certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s," Chakrabarti tweeted at 7:08 p.m. ET on Thursday, before deleting the post less than half-an-hour later.

The comments came after Ocasio-Cortez strongly condemned Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Thursday for deciding that the House should approve a Senate-passed border funding bill without first trying to make changes. Pelosi's decision marked a reversal of her stance on Wednesday, when she adamantly said "no" after being asked whether House Democrats would support the Senate version of the bill to address the humanitarian crisis at the southern U.S.-Mexico border.

Although Pelosi previously pushed for additional safeguards for migrant children to be added to the legislation, House leaders caved today to mounting pressures by moderate Democrats to approve the Senate-passed bill.

"The children come first. At the end of the day, we have to make sure that the resources needed to protect the children are available," Pelosi wrote in a letter to her fellow Democrats. "Therefore, we will not engage in the same disrespectful behavior that the Senate did in ignoring our priorities. In order to get resources to the children fastest, we will reluctantly pass the Senate bill."

After deleting his initial tweet, Chakrabarti doubled down on his criticisms of New Democrats — otherwise known as centrist Democrats or moderate Democrats — and the Blue Dog Caucus with a reworded take on the issue. "Can we stop calling the Blue Dog Caucus 'fiscally conservative but socially liberal?' I missed the part of fiscal conservativeness or social liberalness that includes wasting $4.5 billion of taxpayer money to put kids in concentration camps," he tweeted, noting in other posts that he "replaced" the initial post "with the same point stated differently" because "some progressives took it as a personal insult."

Further explaining his position, Chakrabarti declared in another tweet: "You can be someone who does not personally harbor ill will towards a race, but through your actions still enable a racist system. And a lot of New Democrats and Blue Dogs did that today."

Chakrabarti also addressed his since-deleted comparison of Blue Dogs and New Democrats to 1940s Southern Democrats. "Southern Democrats enabled a racist system too," he added. "I have no idea how personally racist they all were. And we're seeing the same dynamic play out now."
