Police in Ohio have arrested a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of shooting his 11-year-old brother dead in what appears a deliberate attack.

Streetsboro Police were called to reports of gunshots at Alden Drive just after 9:30 p.m. on April 23, the department confirmed in a statement.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 11-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. The boy was sent to University Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio, where he later died from his injuries.

Police then took the victim's 13-year-old brother was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated murder for what they said appears to be a "premeditated shooting."

Lieutenant Patricia Wain, of the Streetsboro Police Department, said that officers have spoken to the family, reports WEWS-TV.

"It doesn't happen here. It's traumatizing. A lot of our officers here have kids that age so to have to walk into that and see that and take that call, it's very difficult," said Wain.

Wain also confirmed that the boy died after being shot in the back, reports WJW. Investigators believe the 13-year-old used a gun he stole from his grandfather's home for the attack.

In a statement, the force added: "We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts during this difficult time. While we respect that everyone may have strong feelings about the incident, we request that you keep comments positive with respect to the family and our community as they grieve their loss. "

Streetsboro City Schools also confirmed in a tweet: "Last night we lost one of our 5th graders in a tragic incident. Grief counselors will be available at Henry Defer Intermediate and the Middle School."

Police are not releasing the name of the victim or his brother as they are both juveniles. The department added additional information will be released as it becomes available, pending notification of family members.
