Olympic Baseball Tokyo 2020: How to Watch USA vs. Japan Gold Medal Game Live

Thirteen years since they met in the bronze medal game at the Beijing Olympics, a baseball Olympic medal is again at stake when the U.S. and Japan cross paths in Yokohama on Saturday. This time, however, the medal up for grabs is of a different metal with the two teams one win away from gold.

The meeting of two baseball superpowers would normally be a big storyline in itself, but there are several added layers of intrigue that should make the gold medal game compelling watching.

The U.S. looks to capture a first Olympic gold since defeating Cuba 4-0 in Sydney 21 years ago, while there couldn't be a more fitting end for Japan's quest for a first Olympic title than winning gold on home soil.

A gold medal for Japan would complete a perfect double for the host nation, who defeated the USA to finish top of the podium in softball, and would vindicate the organizers' decision to include both sports in the Olympic program for the first time since 2008.

Japan narrowly beat Team USA 7-6 when the two teams met in the second round and remain undefeated in the tournament, while the loss was Team USA's only defeat of the Olympics so far.

Despite being made up of a combination of prospects and released veterans, Team USA has grown in strength throughout the tournament and on Thursday it thrashed defending champions South Korea 7-2 to book a berth in the gold medal game for only the second time in history.

"The bottom line: It says USA across our jersey and these guys are playing for a gold medal this weekend," U.S. manager Mike Scioscia told NBC after the game.

"It doesn't get any better that."

Reaching the final was particularly significant for Eddy Alvarez, who will become only the third American to win a medal at the Summer and Winter Olympics after claiming a silver in 2014 at Sochi as part of the U.S. four-man short track team.

Japan, meanwhile, reached the final after defeating South Korea 5-2 on Wednesday courtesy of Tetsuto Yamada's three-run double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Unlike the U.S., Japan halted its major league season to allow its best players to compete at the Games. Whether that will be enough to secure a maiden Olympic gold, remains to be seen.

Here's all you need to know ahead of baseball's Olympic final.
