One Dead After Shooting in Charlotte, N.C. Mall

Law enforcement officials in Charlotte, North Carolina on Thursday responded to a shooting at a local mall that sent last minute Christmas shoppers fleeing the scene. According to local reports, paramedics attended to one person who had been shot in the leg, another having an asthma attack and a pregnant woman who had gone into labor. A police officer eventually shot the gunman dead, the authorities said.

The shooting occurred at Northlake Mall just after 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, according to a local television affiliate WSOC TV. Witnesses said they saw two people fighting inside Journeys, a shoe store franchise, and one pulled out a weapon and shot the other. It remains unclear what what sort of injuries the victim sustained

Once they arrived on the scene, law enforcement officials asked the gunman to drop his weapon, then shot him when he refused to do so, the police said. The Charlotte Observer reported that the officer who shot the gunman was off-duty.
