'Only Murders in the Building' Episode 5 Recap: Tie-Dye Guy's No Longer The Main Suspect

Only Murders in the Building episode five picks up immediately from the cliffhanger ending of the previous episode, which saw Mabel (played by Selena Gomez) being followed by the elusive "Tie-Dye Guy" — the man who ran into the building and up the fire exit stairs the evening Tim Kono was found dead. Newsweek has a full recap of Episode 5 of Only Murders in the Building titled "Twist."

Mabel is not one to be messed with and leads Tie-Dye Guy down an alleyway just as he is reciting a monologue about the inflation of Cheetos and the price of Mabel's jacket. She abruptly turns around and pushes him to the ground, taking out her knitting needle, threatening to take him "down to the bone."

The altercation is an exact mirror of the nightmare Mabel was having in the first episode which involved her stabbing a man to death in her bedroom with her knitting needle. Mabel most definitely has a darker side and we have just got a slight glimpse of it.

However, in a surprising twist, Mabel stops in her tracks after realizing Tie-Dye Guy has a very familiar face. Tie-Dye Guy is Oscar (Aaron Dominguez), who has just got out of jail after serving 10 years for a crime that has yet to be revealed.

Oscar (as Tie-Dye Guy) is one of the main suspects in Mabel, Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver's (Martin Short) search for Tim's killer and Oscar has a very convenient explanation as to why he was in the building at the time of Tim's death. He insists the reason he was heading up the stairs that evening, instead of out like everybody else, was because he was looking for Mabel.

Meanwhile, Oliver suspects Mabel is a serial killer and is making notes for their podcast, "Only Murders in the Building," whilst Charles is trying to keep a level head, believing Mabel must have a reasonable explanation for lying. They decide to follow Oscar and Mabel, who are heading to Shore Road in Jersey.

Mabel believes Tim was heading to visit a jeweler named Gus Montrose but Oscar believes Tim may have been on route to visit a tattoo artist, who just happens to be Mabel's cousin Gustavo 'Tavo' Mora (Esteban Benito), the owner of a tattoo parlor on Shore Road, Long Island.

It's not quite clear why Oscar was in prison, but all of the clues so far suggest he was wrongfully convicted of killing his girlfriend Zoe in 2010, who died after being pushed from the roof of The Arconia. He gives Mabel a big spiel about wanting to stay out of trouble but ends up following her into the tattoo parlor, where he meets Charles and Oliver for the first time.

Charles confronts Mabel on why she lied about knowing Tim Kono and even feels brave enough to accuse Oscar of being with Tim Kono the night he died. Mabel jumps to his defense, insisting he was on the way up the stairs to visit her but Oscar was quick to admit he too had lied.

He confesses he was going to Tim's apartment that night to maybe "f*** him up a little bit" but not to kill him. He insists when he got to Tim's door, he heard a gunshot and ran out of the building in fear.

As the episode comes to an end, Mabel's cousin Tavo drops a clue about Tim's fate. When he overhears Tim died, Tavo reveals Tim once thought he was going to be murdered as he was trying to take down a black market jewelry dealer named Angel.

Charles and Oliver initially find it hard to believe that a lonely investment banker would be interested in dealing with jewelry on the black market until Mabel reveals a bag-full of jewels she uncovered from Tim's apartment.

As she empties them onto the table, the episode comes to a dramatic close. Our crime-solving trio may just be one step closer to solving Tim's murder after all and Tie-Dye Guy may be on their side.

Who Killed Tim? Meet the Suspects Ranked

1. Angel

A new suspect was thrown into the ring in episode five, a black market jewelry dealer by the name of Angel.

Tavo suspects Tim may have been murdered by a gang leader named Angel after Tim was trying to take down the black market jewelry dealer.

After all, Tim had his own share of (stolen) expensive jewelry. Perhaps he saw Angel as a threat to his business and things turned ugly? Anything is possible right now.

2. Oscar/Tie-Dye Guy

We cannot rule Tie-Dye Guy out of the suspect running just yet. Oscar did admit he was going to visit Tim on the night he died, intending to hurt him, but ran away from the apartment door after hearing a gunshot.

How do we know Oscar is not lying and is just trying to cover his tracks?

3. Mabel

There is something still quite fishy about Mabel. She decided to hide from Charles and Oliver that she knew Tim and still has been unable to give a reason why.

She also seems to have a pretty close relationship with Oscar, the one person who has so far confessed to wanting to hurt Tim. There is the possibility Mabel teamed up with Oscar to take down Tim, together.
