OnlyFans Banning Porn Compared to McDonald's Banning Burgers As People Question Decision

The pay-to-view site OnlyFans, which made its name as a place to access adult content, has just revealed that it will ban sexually explicit videos and photographs from October 1.

Although creators may still be able to post nude content, this will have to be in line with the company's new policies.

In a statement, OnlyFans explained: "In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines."

However this will mean that the site, which was launched in 2016 and has grown in the pandemic to over 130 million users, will be leaving many sex workers out of a job.

The company revealed that this is due to pressure from banks and payment processors who have highlighted concerns about the material allowed, but many people have taken to Twitter to air their worries about the move.

Author Nick Milligan, known on the app as @NickMilligan_, wrote: "OnlyFans has ceased allowing sexually explicit content. In other news, McDonalds will cease the sale of fries and nuggets as of tomorrow. #OnlyFans."

Journalist Matthew Thompson also echoed this sentiment, tweeting: "Can't shake the feeling that OnlyFans banning sexual content is a bit like McDonalds banning burgers."

A correspondent for London-based LBC radio Christopher Clegg, @chrisdcleg, commented: "This is gross. A lot of people make their livings on this platform. Plus, sex work IS work. Not cool @OnlyFans !!"

So onlyfans say they are banning adult material because they want to “ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform”…. Are they drunk? More like “give all our money to just for fans”

Writer Liam Young, @liamyoung, observed: "I love the idea that some of the most morally bankrupt people in the world who will literally invest in war, famine and exploitation of all forms are somehow put off by OnlyFans because of sexual images and their wives not liking the idea."

Danish comedian Sofie Hagen, @SofieHagen, exclaimed: "Hang on, f**k this? @OnlyFans why do you hate sex workers? This is absolutely not okay."

British-Iraqi writer and drag performer Amrou Al-Kadhi, @Glamrou, stated: "Solidarity with all sex workers who have been exploited and f**ked over by OnlyFans. I'm so sorry this is happening :(."

News presenter Tom Harwood, @tomhfh, explained: "OnlyFans banning sexually explicit content means it will be a meaningless company in a matter of months. A copycat will take its place.

"Creators will switch platform. Investors will lose a lot of cash. The world will keep on turning.

So in one fell swoop Onlyfans are removing a fairly stable income source from a pretty sizeable number of people.

I mean, it's their business but jesus that's cold. And also quite obviously the end of the app I would have thought? There's already a Patreon.

Editor Adam Shepherd, @AdamShepherdUK, opined: "OnlyFans quitting porn is f**king hilarious. Banning porn never, ever leads to massive user falloff - just ask Tumblr."
