Oscar Nominations 2020: Lupita Nyong'o Trends As She, Jennifer Lopez and Female Directors Are Snubbed
Early on Monday morning, Issa Rae and Jon Cho announced the nominations for the 2020 Oscars with Joker leading the nominations with 11 nods, including ones for best actor and best picture.
However, just as some fans were elated at the nominations that films like Little Women, Parasite and Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood received, others expressed their frustration at some of the notable absences on the various shortlists.
One actress, for example, whose name started trending as soon as the best actress category was announced is Lupita Nyong'o, who failed to secure a nomination for her dual role in Jordan Peele's Us.
The actress, who won an Oscar in 2014 for her role in 12 Years a Slave, has received multiple nominations from critics this year for Us, including one at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but this was not enough to bag her a second Oscar nomination.
There were not five better performances by a lead actress than Lupita Nyong’o’s extraordindary performance in “Us.” Major snub.

Wait I’m sorry they ignored Lupita Nyong’o and nominated Scarlet Johansson TWICE?

Writing on Twitter, one user summed up fan's feelings in a tweet reading, "There were not five better performances by a lead actress than Lupita Nyong'o's extraordindary [sic] performance in Us. Major snub," while another tweeted, "Wait I'm sorry they ignored Lupita Nyong'o and nominated Scarlet Johansson TWICE?"

Another actress who fans were hoping would land a nomination is Jennifer Lopez. Lopez's performance in Hustlers has been the subject of Oscars buzz since the movie's release. After a Golden Globe nomination and dozens of nominations from critics, there was some hope—especially as Hustlers is Lopez's first movie to get a 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes since 1998. However, the two-time Razzie winner missed out on a nomination despite rave reviews for her work in the film.
Jennifer Lopez could and should crush each member of the Academy with her thighs while Fiona Apple blares in the background and Cardi B hisses and claps in approval.

Referencing a notable moment from the Lorene Scafaria movie, one fan tweeted about Jennifer Lopez's snub: "Jennifer Lopez could and should crush each member of the Academy with her thighs while Fiona Apple blares in the background and Cardi B hisses and claps in approval."

Another controversy is brewing after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) failed to nominate any female directors. Greta Gerwig, who in 2018 was the last woman to be nominated in the category (for Lady Bird), missed out on a nom for Little Women, with other notable absences including Scafaria and Marielle Heller for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
In the 90-year history of the Oscars, only five female directors have gotten a nomination in the category, with Gerwig preceded by Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow. Bigelow is so far the only woman to win the award.
In fact, 2020 nominee Martin Scorsese has more nominations on his own than all the women directors combined—something that has annoyed many social media users.
One Twitter user, for example, wrote, "there are always snubs but that all the snubs this year are female directors and people of color is... a BAD look," while another noted, "WOW there are literally more men nominated for pretending to be the pope than female directors."
