'Overwatch' Lunar New Year 2019: Year of the Pig Event Announced

The next Overwatch event celebrating the Year of the Pig starts January 24. The event lasts for a full month, ending on February 18. The teaser tweet for the event shows Soldier:76 playing with a den-den daiko, a traditional Japanese pellet drum. Outside of that, we haven't really gotten much information about what could be coming over the next few weeks.

Squeal with joy!

Overwatch has been struggling to adapt in the two years since the game's launch. Fortnite has basically grabbed its player base and offered them as much shooting and building as they can handle for the low cost of free. The only way Blizzard's tesla cannon-welding gorilla and cyber ninja can ever compete is by offering amazing experiences in their limited-time events. Jeff Kaplan and his team of developers have created some amazing PVE game modes in the past, but we haven't seen anything uniquely new in what feels like a long time.

If Blizzard is going to repeat the Year of the Rooster and Year of the Dog events that we've seen in the past, then this is what we are going to get.

Capture the Flag Limited Time Mode- This game mode originally started as Capture the Rooster two years ago and hasn't changed much since then. Players spawn on either side of the map and attempt to grab the enemy's flag and bring it to their base. The premise is simple, but the mode was so fun they added it to the Arcade after the event ended. Last year, Blizzard added onto the core gameplay, adding some balance changes and limiting dashing or flying abilities.

Skins- Wukong Winston, Bastion Rooster and dozens of other skins will be back in the Item Shop. Here's a full list of all Lunar New Year skins we've seen in the past, so make sure you don't miss out.

Blizzard is going to have add new content to really make this feel like an "event." The Winter holidays event was sorely lacking, only offering a few new skins to tempt players into coming back to the game. I barely opened the client during those weeks, and the only time I did was to open up a few loot boxes I had earned through Twitch Prime. I'm hoping that Blizzard is going to release something that really blows me away, but I'm not expecting it.
