The San Diego Padres came into the offseason with their backs against the wall. The team has a lot of money tied up in its stars, so it might not be able to retain some of the free agents on the market.
The Padres have already lost Dylan Cease to the Toronto Blue Jays in free agency. Cease signed a huge $210 million contract with the American League champions earlier this winter.
Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly predicted on Monday that the Padres would lose veteran pitcher Michael King in free agency after losing Cease.

"The San Diego Padres have already lost the aforementioned Cease and Suarez in free agency, and considering they are reportedly willing to consider trade offers for star reliever Mason Miller and starter Nick Pivetta, it's fair to assume that the usually-aggressive A.J. Preller doesn't have a ton of money to spend this offseason," Kelly wrote. "That likely means that Michael King—acquired in the December 2023 that sent Grisham and Juan Soto to the Yankees—won't return to the Padres. Luckily for him, there will likely be a robust market of other suitors after King posted a 3.10 ERA in two seasons in San Diego."
The Padres simply don't have the money to re-sign King.
As a result, teams like the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles have emerged as the top suitors for King.
The Padres are going to need to pivot to a different starting pitcher to replace King. There aren't many options on the market at his level, but under his price tag, as Jim Bowden of The Athletic projects King to sign for $75 million.
It's going to be difficult, but the Padres will likely need to replace their veteran righty this winter.
