What is Galentine's Day? Gifts, Ideas to Celebrate 'Parks and Recreation' Holiday

Galentine's Day, which takes place on February 13, celebrates female friendships. Those who want to mark the day can choose from a host of Galentine's gift ideas offered by retailers.

The term was coined in a 2010 episode of the sitcom Parks and Recreation, in which Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) invites her "lady friends" to a special brunch.

Knope said in the episode: "What's Galentine's Day? It's only the best day of the year. Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies."

During the season 2 episode, titled "Galentine's Day," Knope give her friends mosaic tiles of their faces made from crushed bottles of their favorite diet sodas.

Galentine's Day was mentioned a few more times throughout the series. In the fourth season of the NBC show, Knope gave her friends needlepoint pillows with their faces on them to celebrate.

Galentine's Day has since gained traction as a holiday in real life, with women around the world celebrating their friends on social media using hashtags such as #galentinesday.

Several retailers, including Walmart and Target, have joined in, introducing Galentine's Day offers and promotions.

In 2018, Walmart tweeted: "It may look like a typo, but it's a thing! Galentine's Day is celebrated on 2/13, and it's [a] giant girl's day. Straight from the tv series to real life!"

The same year, Costco posted on Facebook about Galentine's Day brunch, sharing a link to recipes from California Giant Berry Farms.

Back in 2015, Target tweeted: "RT if you plan on getting your BFFs together and turning Valentine's into #Galentines this year!"
