British police have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of rape following an alleged incident at the U.K. parliament.

London's Metropolitan Police have stressed that the man is not an MP but have declined to comment further, the BBC reported.

The suspect is on bail until a date in January "pending further inquiries," and the parliamentary authorities are understood to be cooperating with police.

"We are aware of an incident on the parliamentary estate which is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Service," a House of Commons spokesman said.

"Parliament is working closely with the police on their investigation and we cannot comment further while this is ongoing."
