The Path To A-Power

CORBIS CORP.'S RECENTLY released Critical Mass: America's Race to Build the Atomic Bomb ($50, 800-246-2065) reminds us why we all got excited about new media in the first place. This documentary on CD-ROM -with biographies of the scientific pioneers, a tour of the Los Alamos facility, historical timelines and photo essays -weaves a narrative of the times that's uniquely multimedia. When you learn, for example, that Niels Bohr "singled out uranium-235 as a fissionable material," you can pause the slide show to hop out for a definition of "fission" -and re-enter the biography where you left off. But Critical Mass is more than just excellent content and design; it shows the industry a glimpse of its own potential.
