Patrick Day Coma Report: Top Boxer Undergoes Brain Surgery Following Brutal KO

Boxer Patrick Day has been hospitalized after being knocked out in his fight against Charles Conwell on Saturday night.

The 2016 U.S. Olympian defeated the super-welterweight in the final round of the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk-Chazz Witherspoon fight at Chicago's Wintrust Arena. Day was "taken directly to hospital" promoter Matchroom Boxing said, without providing further details on his condition.

Referee Celestino Ruiz ended the 12th round at 1 minute and 46 seconds, after the Cleveland boxer landed two right hooks and a left hook on the 27-year-old, ESPN reported. Day's head bounced after hitting the canvas, according to sports streaming service DAZN.

Cornwell had dominated the fight, according to ESPN writer Dan Rafael, and had already dropped Day in the fourth and eighth rounds.

Citing an unnamed source, ESPN reported Day, from Freeport, New York, had undergone emergency brain surgery and was in a coma.

Medics tended to an unconscious Day in the ring, before he was removed on a stretcher, according to ESPN. On the way to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the athlete reportedly had a seizure.

DAZN said a source close to Day's family also claimed he had emergency brain surgery, and had been fitted with a breathing tube.

Following the fight, Conwell sent well wishes to his opponent. He told IFL TV: "I give my blessings and concerns to him and his team. I hope he is OK. I know he is a great person."

Conwell shared the footage of the interview on Twitter, alongside the hashtag: "#prayforpatrickday" and retweeted several messages sharing the same sentiment.

High-profile figures in boxing also offered their thoughts to Day as he recovered in hospital.

American boxing promoter Louis John "Lou" DiBella, Jr. tweeted: "Please pray for Patrick Day. Please. Such a good person."

Matchroom's Eddie Hearn wrote on Twitter: "Deepest prayers with Patrick right now."

Day's previous feat was a points loss to the undefeated Carlos Adames on June 28.

In 2012, Day won the Daily News Golden Gloves title. His style was described at the time as "scintillating."

In the main fight on the bill, Usyk won in his heavyweight debut appearance against Witherspoon. Usyk stopped Witherspoon in the seventh round, retaining his status as the World Boxing Organisation's challenger to the winner of the fight between Andy Ruiz Jr and Anthony Joshua on December 7, according to BBC Sport.

Usyk was due to fight Tyrone Spong, but instead faced Witsherpoon after Spong tested positive for clomiphene, a drug used to treat infertility in women.
