People Are Losing It Over 2010 Yearbook Which Is a Masterclass in Emo Hair

From edgy oversized bangs to chunky highlights and contrasting color blocks, the early 2000s were a particularly wild time for hairstyles.

A viral TikTok video has left the internet in stitches after the poster found her older sister's yearbook which reads like a masterclass in 2000s emo haircuts. User chanlynklay posted the video, which can be seen here, on March 19. It starts with a close-up of her laughing as the overlay text reads: "Found my sister's yearbook from 2010."

With 8.7 million views it has left viewers in stitches, with those who remember their own ill-fated emo haircuts laughing along with younger viewers.

The video flicks between clips of the yearbook, featuring high school kids showing off the iconic styles.

The distinctive haircuts were born of the emo phenomenon that made headlines in the mid-2000s, including in the U.K.'s Daily Mail which notably called the sub-genre a "cult" while "warning" parents about dramatic lyrics and "boys who look like girls."

Similarly, ABC4 Utah ran a news report in 2007 about the "dangerous elements" of the culture that it reported being found on the internet, in books, magazines, and the movie Spider-Man 3.

With 1.9 million likes and more than 15,000 comments, the video has created a stir on the video-sharing app TikTok. "Take me back to when people had style," said one commenter, while another wrote: "The best high school years. We had the internet but weren't addicted yet."

Another commenter joked: "It's not a phase," and one TikToker said: "The side bangs had a chokehold on everyone."

While there have been murmurs of an emo revival in recent years – most notably with the internet's reaction to the When We Were Young 2022 music festival announcement – there are also signs that the hairstyles of the 2000s might be making a comeback.

In March Dazed Beauty reported that "scene kid raccoon tail hair was everywhere at fashion week," making an appearance on the runway alongside new season collections of Marc Jacobs, Cormio and Connor McKnight.

Similarly back in 2021, Glamour Magazine in the U.K. reported that side-sweep bangs were back – sharing pictures of the 2000s style in more recent looks from Ariana Grande, Beyoncé and Madison Beer.

Other viewers of the viral video on TikTok commented on the iconic looks, with one user writing: "The way I wanted to be them when I was a kid," and another said: "This was when life was at its peak."

Another commenter asked: "Honestly who wasn't emo in 2010! All the cool people went through that phase at some point."

After the first video, user chanlynklay shared a part two of the much-loved yearbook in a video that can be seen here. The update featured more of the iconic haircuts and even a section that promised "an inside look on the skaters and metalheads eating lunch at their favorite spot."
