Perfect Regular Season? Steelers Can Accomplish a Feat Only These Teams Have Done

The Pittsburgh Steelers franchise has already established itself as one of the best in NFL history. The Steelers, which became the first NFL team to win four Super Bowls, can join even more elite company if its perfect season in 2020 continues.

The Steelers are the only remaining undefeated NFL team after nine weeks of play. The team is 9-0 with seven games remaining—all winnable. Should the Steelers go unscathed through the regular season, they would become only the third team in the Super Bowl era to go undefeated in regular season. Here are the others:

  • 1972 Miami Dolphins
  • 2007 New England Patriots

The Miami Dolphins completed the perfect regular season at 14-0 and completed the only perfect season in the last 55 years with a Super Bowl win over the Washington Redskins to finish 16-0.

The 2007 Patriots are the only team in the Super Bowl era to go undefeated in a 16-game regular season. Those Patriots won two playoff games to get to the Super Bowl, only to lose to the New York Giants, thus finishing the season with an 18-1 record.

Here's what the 2020 Pittsburgh Steelers have to face in their next seven games (all of them winnable).

11/22 (Sun) at Jacksonville (1-8)
11/26 (Thu) vs Baltimore (6-3)
12/06 (Sun) vs Washington (2-7)
12/13 (Sun) at Buffalo (7-3)
12/21 (Mon) at Cincinnati (2-6-1)
12/27 (Sun) vs Indianapolis (6-3)
01/03 (Sun) at Cleveland (6-3)

Here's the good news: Of the remaining four road games, two of them are against teams that have losing records (Jacksonville and Cincinnati).
The not so good: The other two remaining road games (Buffalo and Indianapolis) are against teams needing big wins to maintain first place in their respective AFC divisions.

Bad: Baltimore rolls into town on Thanksgiving with upset on its mind.
Good: Thanksgiving game, on a short week, is at home.
Better: A win over the Ravens would likely clinch the AFC North title.

Good: A slumbering Washington team comes to Pittsburgh.
Bad: A bad Washington team still has a chance to make the playoffs, making the game more enticing.
But: This game comes 10 days after the last game, thanks to Thanksgiving, so good.

Trap game: Cleveland Browns (01/03/2021)
Why: Browns may or may not be out of the playoff mix, Steelers could have clinched home field (and resting players) and the Browns would love nothing more than knocking off Pittsburgh to end regular season. Of course, it would be the perfect ending to 2020, even though the game would be in 2021.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently 9-0, the only unbeaten team in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs, who are the defending Super Bowl champions, are 8-1. Right now, the Steelers would hold home-field advantage in the AFC.

The Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns are each 6-3 this season, both sitting three games behind the Steelers in the AFC North.
