PG&E Announces More Planned California Blackouts as Wildfires Rage, Here Are the Cities Affected

Energy company PG&E, already grappling with critical fire weather that has put California in a State of Emergency under heavy fire conditions in the Sonoma and Los Angeles Counties, has announced that it will begin more planned power outages on Saturday afternoon. Potentially plunging 850,000 California customers into the dark, they hope to beat the development of the violent windstorm, according to The San Francisco Gate.

"Customers should prepare for a shutoff lasting 48 hours or longer, given the long duration of the wind event," the company said in a Friday afternoon statement.

At press time, California is grappling with The Tick Fire, a 4,300 acre burn that's only 5 percent contained. As of Friday, 600 firefighters were battling the blaze.

The announced shutdowns also come on the heels of Governor Gavin Newsom announcing that the state will hold PG&E "accountable" for the Tick Fire for "simply not doing their jobs," according to CNN.

"We will hold them accountable," Newsom said, "This is not the new normal, this cannot continue."

Bill Johnson, CEO of PG&E, has said that it's too soon to determine the source of the fire and an investigation is still ongoing.
