Manchester United looks set to be without one of its key defenders at a crucial stage of the season, after Phil Jones reportedly broke a toe in England training.

Frequent injury problems have held up Jones' United career since his transfer from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, but he has found a consistent starting place under Jose Mourinho in central defense next to another player once thought to be an outcast in Marcos Rojo.

Jones' injury, according to the Daily Mirror, is a suspected broken toe inflicted by his United and England teammate Chris Smalling. England plays Germany at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Wednesday evening in a friendly international.

England has been sent back Jones to United for further evaluation, but he could miss all of United's April fixture list. The club plays nine games next month, including both legs of the UEFA Europa League quarterfinal against Anderlecht.
