The Philadelphia Phillies were a great regular-season team in 2025, but that success didn't carry over to the playoffs once again.

This has become the story of the Phillies. Philadelphia can stack up wins left and right in the regular season, but when the playoffs arrive, it hasn't been able to make a deep run to the World Series. In 2024, the reason for this was the bullpen. In 2025, there wasn't one specific cause. It just wasn't the Phillies' year despite finishing the regular season with the second-best record in the National League at 96-66.

The Phillies have plenty of talent, but clearly something needs to change. The Athletic's Jim Bowden attempted to come up with solutions for the Phillies' issues and one idea he suggested was moving on from Alec Bohm to pursue Alex Bregman.

"Third base is a spot on the roster where change needs to be made — both for Bohm’s sake and the Phillies,'" Bowden said. "Bohm has a career .328 OBP and is a 10- to 15-home run hitter, numbers the Phillies could upgrade with the right player acquisition this offseason. In free agency, Alex Bregman will be available, and in addition to his reliable bat and consistent glove, he’d bring strong leadership skills and postseason success with him."

It's easy to see why this would be a good idea. Reports already have surfaced, including from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, suggesting that Bregman will be opting out of his three-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.

Bregman is a guy who obviously can help in the lineup -- especially if Kyle Schwarber walks in free agency. He slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs across 114 games played in 2025. He also provided stellar defense at the hot corner. What's arguably more important, though, is the leadership he could bring to Philadelphia. The Phillies are already loaded with talented veterans, like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner, but Bregman's intangibles have been raved about throughout his time in Boston and before with the Houston Astros.

Especially coming off another disappointing ending to the season, bringing in a guy who has been able to get over the hump wouldn't hurt.
