A post describing a “master-class” moment of boundary setting on a flight after a passenger encroached on a woman’s personal space has gone viral on Threads.

The post was shared by user @digbymomma on February 19 and has since garnered 775,000 views. In the post, the user recounted what she saw while traveling on a flight departing from Maine.

“Currently on a flight leaving Maine and just witnessed a master-class in boundaries,” the user wrote. She described the woman involved as a “60‑something bad***” who addressed the man seated next to her after he took up too much space.

According to the post, the woman calmly told him: “Sir, put your legs together and remove your arm from touching me. Now.”

The man's response was immediate. “And yes…he immediately complied,” @digbymomma added, before encouraging other women to take note of how the situation was handled.

The viral moment comes as air travel continues to reach record levels. According to a January report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), total full‑year passenger demand in 2025 increased 5.3 percent compared with 2024, while total capacity rose 5.2 percent. The overall passenger load factor—the percentage of available seating filled by passengers—reached 83.6 percent in 2025, marking a record high for full‑year traffic.

International travel also saw notable growth, with full‑year demand rising 7.1 percent compared with 2024 and capacity increasing 6.8 percent. The international passenger load factor reached 83.5 percent in 2025, another record, according to the IATA.

As planes become increasingly full, shared space—particularly cramped seating—has become a frequent source of tension among passengers. The response highlighted in the viral Threads post struck a chord with many users, many of whom praised the woman’s direct approach and shared broader frustrations about personal space and expectations of politeness, particularly for women.

User @violator_and_pendog described the response as “Concise. Firm. Clear boundary set,” adding that “We don’t have to be polite—that’s clearly gotten many women absolutely nowhere.”

Another user, @living_on_in_victoria, reflected on how women are often socialized to soften their responses, writing: “Women are so overtrained to be polite, smile and say please and thank you all the time. Crazy. Guess what, after 60 your female vocabulary changes and it’s very colorful and expressive. I train my girl friends as they age.”

Others echoed similar sentiments. User @lisa_.collins wrote: “WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO TELL THEM TO HAVE COMMON DECENCY!!”

Meanwhile, @altspesh68 commented: “How about men take notes and stop behaving like pigs and spreading your body everywhere and learn to be respectful of others??”

User @mostlysweetwithasideofsalt agreed, questioning whether the same behavior would have occurred if the seatmate had been another man. “How about the men take notes and just be respectful of women? If it were a man sitting beside him, would he be invading his space? I think not,” they wrote.

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via Threads.
