Video: Players Attack Referee in Huge Brawl at Basketball Youth Game

Referees at a youth basketball game in Atlanta were attacked by players after a vicious brawl erupted and quickly spiralled out of control.

Footage posted on Twitter by a user who identifies himself as Doug Jones shows three players attacking an official lying on the floor.

The catalyst of the tussle, which developed on Sunday morning in the fourth quarter of the match between the Houston Raptors and R.A.W. Athletics from Chicago, is not yet clear but the video clearly shows adults and officials running onto the court in an attempt to break up the fight. The melee quickly developed into an all-out brawl.

Howard Martin, the head coach of R.A.W.—the team playing in white—explained the fight broke out after one of his players was attacked by a referee.

“A ref actually walked up on one of our players and attacked him,” Martin tweeted, as reported by Yahoo Sports.

“Everyone tried to break it all up, then the ref’s father (who was working a game on a different court) ran over to our court and rushed our guys. Everyone in the gym, the other team and the directors saw everything.”

The tweet has since been deleted and the footage that appears on Twitter is not conclusive enough to confirm or dismiss his version of events.

However, WXIA-TV, an Atlanta-based NBC-affiliated network, reported his statement "was not well-received by those with video access to the brawl, believing the referees had been intimidated throughout the game, leading up to the various fights."

The venue where the game took place, the LakePoint Champions Center, took to social media to express its disappointment at the incident.

In a statement, the venue said it was "disappointed in the incident that occurred this morning at The Association basketball tournament. Behavior like this by any party will not be tolerated.”
