When Is The Players Championship 2020? Where to Watch, Live Stream, TV Channel and Odds

As the world of sports grinds to a halt because of the coronavirus outbreak, golf soldiers on for now.

The PGA Tour said it has no plans to postpone The Players Championship, which is due to get underway on Thursday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

"With the information currently available, The Players championship will continue as scheduled, although we will absolutely continue to review recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization and local health administrations," the tour said in a statement.

"This is obviously a very fluid situation that requires constant review, communication and transparency, and we are dedicated to all three aspects."

As things stand, however, the most prestigious tournament of the golfing season aside from the four majors is set to go ahead as planned.

Rory McIlroy arrives in Florida hoping to become only the seventh player to win The Players Championship multiple times and the first to defend his title at TPC Sawgrass, following his triumph a year ago.

The world No. 1 has been in an outstanding run of form since missing the cut at the Open Championship in July, with 10 top-10 finishes in his last 11 starts.

It is therefore no surprise to see him as the bookmakers favorite ahead of world No. 2 Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas.

Like McIlroy, Rahm has enjoyed a remarkable run of form since suffering a fourth round meltdown at The Players 12 months ago. Leading after 54 holes, the Spaniard shot a 4-over-par 76 in the final round, squandering his chances of success.

Depending on how McIlroy and Koepka perform, Rahm could climb to the top of the world rankings with a win or a solo second-place finish.

The Spaniard admitted the chance of becoming the world No. 1 and the desire to rectify his slump from a year ago added extra motivation.

"I might have something to prove besides just good golf," was quoted as saying by Golf Channel. "It's exciting."

With the notable exception of Tiger Woods, The Players' field is as star-studded as usual. Former world No. 1 Brooks Kroepka will play alongside McIlroy and Rahm, while Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson will bring their combined eight major titles to the party.

The European contingent, meanwhile, includes former world No. 1 Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, 2016 Open Championship winner Henrik Stenson and 2017 Master champion Sergio Garcia among others.

Patrick Reed, the man who took over the Green Jacket from Garcia, will also be among the players teeing off on Thursday.

The Texan has been a controversial figure this season following a penalty he incurred during a tournament in December at the Bahamas.

Reed has been met by hostile receptions since the incident but insisted he had no fears of being heckled at TPC Sawgrass, where the atmosphere has been particularly lively in recent years.

"I think the PGA Tour has done a great job on the security and the fans," Reed said in a press conference on Wednesday. "I feel like, as a whole, the fans have been pretty good. You're always going to get a couple people here and there that are going to say something. That's normal, in any sport you play. For me, when I get inside those ropes I have a job to do."

Here's all you need to know about the tournament.
