'Pokémon Go' Johto Festival Event: New Shiny Pokémon and Research Tasks Added

With the addition of the Celebi Special Research Tasks in Pokémon Go, a new event has begun. The Johto Festival brings an increased spawn rate of Pokémon from the Johto region as well as other in-game bonuses.

Players have reported new Shiny Pokémon have been added to Pokémon Go, as well as research tasks that involve catching Johto Pokémon. The event begins Aug. 20, and there isn't a specific end time or date for the Johto Festival just yet. Here's all the information players need to take advantage of the new event in Pokémon Go.

Reports on social media claim the Johto Festival added three new Shiny Pokémon to Pokémon Go, from the Sunkern, Pineco and Natu evolutionary lines.

As with other Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Go, they do not appear in their different form in the overworld. Trainers will have to tap on their overworld model to encounter and try to catch them in order to find out if they are Shiny. All three new Shiny Johto Festival Pokémon are more yellow or gold in color.

Niantic often adds new Research Tasks to coincide with an event or update and the Johto Festival is no exception. There are seven new Research Tasks that will yield a Pokémon encounter from the Johto region or a rare item.

Here is the list of Johto Festival Research Tasks with their rewards:

  • Catch three Sunkern - Dragon Scale or Sun Stone or Upgrade or Metal Coat or Kings Rock
  • Catch five Water-type Pokémon - Poliwhirl or Seadra encounter
  • Evolve three Sunkern or Natu - Pineco Encounter
  • Make three Excellent throws - Onix or Scyther encounter
  • Make three Great Curveball throws in a row - Rare Candy (x1)
  • Make four Great Curveball throws in a row - Miltank encounter
  • Win a Raid - Porygon encounter

Hours after the Johto Festival started, Raid Battles were updated to include more Pokémon from the Johto region. Here's the list of Raids during the Johto Festival.

Tier 1

  • Chikorita
  • Cyndaquil
  • Totodile
  • Sunkern
  • Yanma

Tier 2

  • Pineco

Tier 4

  • Ursaring

Besides the new Shiny Pokémon and Research Tasks, Pokémon Go players can enjoy other in-game perks. Of course, Pokémon from the Johto region are more likely to spawn including the elusive Unknown, so go out and explore your neighborhood to see what will appear.

The Johto Festival also adds some new attire for player avatars, including a free Celebi shirt. The other new Johto-inspired attire does require some gold coins, so check out what the Style tab has to offer.
