'Pokémon Go' Mareep Incense Day: Start Time and Mega Ampharos Counters

To prepare Pokémon Go trainers for the upcoming Johto Celebration, Niantic is putting on a special event focused on the Electric-type Pokémon Mareep.

Mareep, the electric sheep, is a staple of the Johto region and with the upcoming Incense Day event, trainers will have the best chance to not only catch the Pokémon, but also its shiny variant.

This Sunday's Incense Day event will also give trainers the opportunity to power up their Ampharos with an exclusive attack. Evolving Flaaffy, the evolved form of Mareep, into Ampharos during the Incense event will allow the Electric-type to learn Dragon Pulse.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Mareep Incense Day event.

POKEMON GO MAREEP INCENSE DAY START TIME

The Mareep Incense Day begins Sunday, January 24, at 11 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. local time.

POKEMON GO MAREEP INCENSE DAY SCHEDULE

The official Pokémon Go blog confirmed that the Mareep Incense Day will see different Pokémon appear at different hours. The types of Pokémon that will appear will alternate between Electric and Dragon.

Here's the schedule for the Mareep Incense Day event:

  • From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Electric-type Pokémon
  • From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.: Dragon-type Pokémon and Pokémon that evolve into Dragon-type Pokémon
  • From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Electric-type Pokémon
  • From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Dragon-type Pokémon and Pokémon that evolve into Dragon-type Pokémon

During the time that Electric-type Pokémon are featured, trainers might encounter Pikachu, Magnemite, Voltorb, Chinchou, Mareep, Plusle, Minun and Stunfisk.

During Dragon-type hours, trainers will see Horsea, Dratini, Mareep, Trapinch, Vibrava, Swablu and Bagon.

MEGA AMPHAROS COUNTERS

Mega Ampharos began appearing in Mega Raids in Pokémon Go on Tuesday, January 19, which is perfect timing, considering this event is about to begin.

Trainers will be able to battle and collect Mega Ampharos Energy to power up their own Ampharos in battle. However, you'll need to bring strong Pokémon into battle against it.

Mega Ampharos is an Electric and Dragon-type Pokémon, making it weak to Ground, Dragon, Ice and Fairy-type attacks. There are plenty of strong Ground and Dragon-type Pokémon to take into battle, including a couple of Megas.

Mega Charizard X is a great choice to pit Dragon against Dragon. However, Dragon types are weak to Dragon-type attacks, so they may not be the best option to take on Mega Ampharos.

Abomasnow is the only other choice trainers should consider as their Mega Pokémon. Its Grass typing makes it resistant to Ampharos' Electric-type attacks, and it boosts Ice-type attacks, which are strong against the Mega's Dragon typing.

Here's a list of Pokémon to consider when battling Mega Ampharos:

  • Mega Charizard X with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw
  • Mega Abomasnow with Powder Snow and Weather Ball (Ice)
  • Garchomp with Mud Shot and Earthquake
  • Rhyperior with Mud Slap and Earthquake
  • Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake
  • Excadrill with Mud Slap and Drill Run
