'Pokémon Go' Team Rocket Invasion: Special Tasks, Rewards and Everything You Need to Know

After a brief tease earlier in the week, it seems like Team Go Rocket has finally arrived in Pokémon Go, bring new special tasks and making it easier to catch Shadow Pokémon.

From our personal experience, it seems that it's easier than ever to identify which Pokestop was inhabited by Team Go Rocket. Before you had to see a slight discolored Pokestop that was twitching. Now, when you get close to it a Team Go Rocket Grunt will appear next to an all black Pokestop with the iconic R symbol above it.

Before we go into all the details from this latest event, take a look at the promo video from Niantic below.

The method of catching and purifying Shadow Pokémon remains unchanged from earlier in the week.

Once you've encountered a Team Go Rocket Grunt at a Pokestop you'll enter a battle. Defeat their team to enter a catch sequence. This step will have you try and catch that Grunts Shadow Pokémon.

Similar to the catching sequence after a Raid Battle, you'll earn a number of premiere balls depending on how well you took down the Team Go Rocket Grunt.

After you've captured the Shadow Pokémon, you'll notice that it has the exclusive move Frustration.

Use candy and stardust to purify the Shadow Pokémon. The amount depends on the evolution stage.

Pokémon like Charmander and Bulbasaur will need 2000 stardust and two candy. An evolved Shadow Pokémon like Charizard will need 5000 stardust and five candy.

Once a Shadow Pokémon is purified, Frustration will be replaced by Return. Return will not be replaced by another move if that Pokémon is evolved.

Here's the list of Shadow Pokémon that can be caught:

  • Bulbasaur
  • Charmander
  • Squirtle
  • Rattata
  • Zubat
  • Snorlax
  • Dratini
  • Mudkip
