'Pokémon Go' Tour: Kanto Event to Bring All Original 151 Shinies to the Game

Niantic has announced a new virtual event for 2021 that will give Pokémon Go trainers the chance to catch all 151 Pokémon from the Kanto region and their Shiny forms.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise and Pokémon Go's own fifth anniversary, Niantic will bring trainers back to Kanto in a new event called Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto.

This event will be a virtual ticketed event on February 20, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time. During the 12-hour event, all 150 Pokémon from the Kanto region will be available to catch in the wild, Raids, rewards for completing research and in Eggs. Their Shiny forms will also be available during this time—even some that are making their Pokémon Go debuts.

If you're wondering about Shiny Mew, the Mythical Pokémon can be caught via a Special Research for those who attend the event. Completing this research will unlock an additional Special Research story that will reward trainers with a Shiny Mew encounter.

So, how do you get access to this special event? Starting today, Niantic will be selling two different types of tickets to the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event. Each ticket can be purchased in-app for $11.99 and each comes with its own version-exclusive Pokémon, just like the games that the mobile game is based on.

Trainers who purchase the Red Version ticket will see these Pokémon attracted to Incense during the event: Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, Growlithe, Scyther and Electabuzz. This ticket will also give trainers increased chances of encountering these Shiny Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pidgey, Ekans, Pikachu, Nidoran ♀, Oddish, Diglett, Mankey, Growlithe, Ponyta, Shellder, Drowzee, Krabby, Hitmonlee, Lickitung, Scyther, Electabuzz, Eevee, Kabuto and Dratini.

With the Green Version ticket, trainers will see these Pokémon attracted to Incense: Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, Bellsprout, Magmar and Pinsir. As for the Shiny Pokémon, here are the species that will appear more frequently: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pidgey, Pikachu, Sandshrew, Nidoran ♂, Vulpix, Meowth, Psyduck, Bellsprout, Geodude, Exeggcute, Hitmonchan, Koffing, Tangela, Horsea, Magmar, Pinsir, Eevee, Omanyte and Dratini.

Niantic confirms that you can't change your choice once it's made, but you won't have to make that decision until closer to the event in February.

Trainers who purchase the tickets by January 14 at 2:59 a.m. EST will receive a free ticket for the January Community Day Special Research story. January's Community Day is scheduled for Saturday, January 16. February's event is scheduled for Sunday, February 7, and if trainers purchase their ticket by February 3, they'll get a free ticket to that month's Community Day Special Research story.

Aside from the version-exclusive Pokémon, ticket buyers will have a chance to complete the Special Research story, which will reward a special Pokémon. This is separate from the Shiny Mew research that will be available once this first research is completed.

If a ticket is not in your future, Pokémon Go trainers will still be able to enjoy the Kanto Tour with a few features that will be available to all players. Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno and Mewtwo will appear in Level 5 Raids during the event. Event-exclusive Timed Research will be available and the trade range will be increased to 40 km during the event, so you'll still have a chance to catch Kanto-region Pokémon.

Trainers will also be able to teach their Pokémon exclusive attacks for PVP.

  • Venusaur evolved from Ivysaur or caught during the event will know Frenzy Plant.
  • Charizard evolved from Charmeleon or caught during the event will know Blast Burn.
  • Blastoise evolved from Wartortle or caught during the event will know Hydro Cannon.
