'Pokémon Go' Water Festival: Start Time, Research Tasks, Shiny Carvanha, Barboach and More

Niantic is bringing the Water Festival event back to Pokémon Go, letting players catch as many Water-type Pokémon as possible while enjoying in-game bonuses and the debuts of new Shiny Pokémon.

This year's Water Festival event lasts for one week and brings a ton of changes to Pokémon Go. For one, Water-type Pokémon like Magikarp, Wooper, Wailmer and more will appear more frequently in the wild. This is great for those trying to gather enough candy to evolve their Wailmers or hoping to catch an already released Shiny Pokémon like Shiny Magikarp.

Areas around water will also see spawns of evolved and rarer Pokémon like Wartortle, Poliwhirl, Lapras, Feebas and more.

There's a lot you can do during the 2019 Water Festival in Pokémon Go and we have all the key information gathered in one place including its start time, end time and a recap of what to expect.

POKEMON GO WATER FESTIVAL START TIME

The Pokémon Go Water Festival begins Friday, August 23 at 4 p.m. EDT and ends Friday, August 30 at 4 p.m. EDT.

SHINY CARVANHA AND SHINY BARBOACH

Like past events, this year's Water Festival introduces a Shiny Pokémon into the popular mobile game.

However, this time there will be two different Shiny Pokémon to catch: Shiny Carvanha and Shiny Barboach. These Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild so the chance of encountering one will be increased.

Shiny Carvanha changes drastically, going from dark red and blue to a neon blue and green. Shiny Barboach's coloring changes to a more yellow or beige hue. To catch these Pokémon, you'll need to interact with it in the wild. You'll see their shiny status during the catch step.

WATER FESTIVAL RESEARCH TASKS

New Research Tasks will be available in PokeStops when the Water Festival begins. While Niantic hasn't confirmed it, Pokémon Go data miner Chrales found the tasks in the coding.

You can check out the research tasks below.

WATER FESTIVAL RAID CHANGES

The Raid bosses will change during the Water Festival to reflect the type theme. While exact Raid Bosses are not yet known, the official Pokémon Go blog confirmed Pokémon like Blastoise, Vaporeon and Lapras will appear.

Mesprit, Uxie and Axelf will also start to appear in five-star Raids. However, the Pokémon you can fight and catch depends on your region.

IN-GAME BONUSES

Pokémon Go players will enjoy double candy for hatching Pokémon from eggs. Water-type Pokémon that are your Buddy will earn candy twice as fast. So if you're looking to walk your Feebas, this is the time to do so.

Kingler and Crawdaunt will also be able to learn Crabhammer, a Water-type Charged attack that's new to the game. They'll have a chance to learn it upon evolving or by using a Charged ™ on either Pokémon.

What do you think of this year's Water Festival? Which of the two new Shinies do you like better? Sound off in the comments section.
