'Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee' Post-Game to Include Master Trainers

A new feature for Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let's Go Eevee has been revealed and will give players of the upcoming Nintendo Switch game more time to battle it out in the retelling of Pokémon Yellow.

Master Trainers are NPCs scattered throughout the Kanto Region. They each use only one Pokémon of the original 151 and they'll challenge you to a one-on-one battle. You can only use that same Pokémon with no items allowed. These trainers will appear only after you become Pokémon League Champion.

What makes these Master Trainers difficult are their Pokémon movesets. They are designed to make it difficult for players to use specific Pokémon against them, some examples in the trailer include Charizard using Thunder Punch, Gyarados using Thunderbolt (or Thunder), Pinsir using Rock Slide, Kabutops using Mega Drain (or Giga Drain), and Lapras using Solarbeam.

Once a Master Trainer is defeated, players will receive their title. NPCs in Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee will refer to you by that title. Nurse Joy in the Pokémon Center is shown as an example when she refers to the trainer as "Venusaur Master Elaine." This title will also be present in Link Battles with friends online.

The end of the trailer even gives a funny callback to one of the earliest episodes of the Pokémon anime. In it, you'll find a Bug Catcher class trainer who is a Metapod Master. The trailer shows him having Metapod use the move Harden, a reference to the episode where Ash battled the Samurai in a battle between the Bug-types.

This feature was teased by Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee director Junichi Masuda in recent interviews with Vandal and Polygon as a part of the post-game.

Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee will release on Nov. 16.
