'Pokémon Sword and Shield' Theory: Kalos Region Should Be Included

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are set to release in late 2019, but that hasn't stopped the community from speculating on what fans can expect in Gen 8.

And while leaks and rumors run rampant, one in particular seems to be gaining traction. Pokémon fans are excited about a rumor that suggests they will be able to explore a second region in Sword and Shield in addition to U.K.-inspired Galos. And although it's just speculation, the possibility of going to a new or previously journeyed region could make Gen 8 twice as memorable.

Looking at the information we do have, many Pokémon fans are looking at the Kalos region, from Pokémon X and Y, as the second region we could explore.

While there's nothing concrete released by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company, it's fun to speculate and try and put pieces together because there could be a relationship between the Galar and Kalos regions.

Here are some aspects of Pokémon X and Y that has us questioning whether a return to Kalos is possible.

The Kalos region was based on France while the Galar region is based on the U.K. Both countries are in Europe and if The Pokémon Company based their geographic locations on the real countries, then it should be possible to travel between the Galar and Kalos regions.

It's just 11 hours by car to go from the center of England to France, and even shorter by plane and train. The Eurostar transport system allows for travelers to go to various countries in Europe and there's a route from England to France, known informally as the Chunnel (tunnel under the English channel), that takes between two and three hours.

Speaking of trains, the Kalos and Galar region are filled with them.

The Sword and Shield announcement trailer didn't reveal the names or what the transportation systems of the Galar region are, but they did show that there are trains that run through the country.

In Pokémon X and Y, there are multiple trains that transport people within the Kalos region and possibly out of it.

The first train station in Kalos is the one in Lumiose City. This train will lead trainers to Kiloude City where the Friend Safari is located. However, the most intriguing station is the one in Couriway Town.

Couriway Town's train station can't be used in X and Y, but it's described as a place that brings "trainers from a long way away." It was never utilized in X and Y, and there was never a third version of Gen 6 for trainers to possibly use it but maybe this is what connects the two regions together.

The story of Pokémon X and Y revolved around a mysterious character named AZ. He was a trainer who saw a war waged 3000 years ago. In the battle, his favorite Pokémon Floette was killed and AZ created a machine to bring it back.

Upset with how the world has begun and that it cost him his Pokémon, AZ used the machine as an "ultimate weapon" and ended the war by becoming a "bringer of destruction." AZ's Floette would not be happy with what his trainer did, and left him.

We never learned about the war itself and whether it was between regions or whatever, but there feels like a lot of potential to explore what happened in the past and if there was a war between regions, this would be the first time a Pokémon game dealt with that.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are expected to release on Nintendo Switch in late 2019.
